DOURO VALLEY SELF-GUIDED TOUR

DOURO VALLEY SELF-GUIDED TOUR image

A 6-Day Gravel Adventure

Welcome to Paradise!

The Douro Valley is an exceptional destination for cycle tourism. The stunning ancient vineyards, quiet roads and tracks, fantastic gastronomy and generosity of the people make for wonderful experiences on two wheels.

I have created this Douro Valley Gravel tour over 6 days, with an average of 60km per day. Its achievable for most strong cyclists with a fair amount of fitness. The Douro Valley is a hilly region and to get to the best locations climbs cannot be avoided - be prepared for hills of up to 10% gradient (but mostly 5-7%).

Remember! You can always rent an e-bike if you think the climbing would be more fun that way.

Gravel riding in the Douro

The Douro is not known specifically for it's gravel riding, and during this tour there is plenty of backroad (tarmac) riding too. However it's perfect as a tour for those people who prefer riding gravel bikes and like to explore down the 'Eco Pistas', little tracks, cobbled streets and the tiny old roads you wouldn't take a regular road bike on!

Why the 'Alto Douro'?

You will notice this tour stays to the east of Portugal, and away from Porto - in the upper Douro Valley known as the 'Alto Douro'. This is because the roads and tracks closer to Porto are much busier and honestly, not nearly as nice as the area upstream of Peso da Regua. It's so important to us that our clients ride on quiet, safe roads - and this area has it all.

You will stay in great 3-4* hotels and we will recommend traditional restaurants serving local dishes and (of course!) wine.

My main aim with any cycle tour in Portugal is to give my clients a glimpse of real Portugal. And this one will be no exception.

Quinta do Monte Travesso - Country Houses & Winery

Tabuaço
Check in15pm
Check out12am

Nestled in a serene valley between the Douro River and the surrounding mountains, Quinta do Monte Travesso is a family-run estate in Portugal’s Cima-Corgo sub-region with a rich winemaking heritage dating back to 1896. Owned by the Nápoles de Carvalho family for five generations, the quinta combines tradition with innovation: its 16 hectares of schist vineyards produce DOC Douro wines and olive oil, vinified in the same cellar that has been in continuous use since the estate’s founding. For guests, the property offers two beautifully restored country houses (Casa da Tília and Casa do Sousão), framed by gardens and a historic chapel, plus immersive wine tourism experiences: guided vineyard and cellar tours, tastings (both wine and olive oil), picnics, vintage van rides, and more. Awarded for sustainable wine tourism (“Best of Wine Tourism 2019”), this quinta is a peaceful retreat full of character, authenticity, and timeless Douro charm.

CLIMATE

Spring and autumn are both wonderful seasons for this tour, with pleasant temperatures and minimal chance of winter rains. However, it can be undertaken all-year round, as the climate here is milder than the south of the country.

If you want to catch some of the grape harvest, then September is the month to enjoy this tour!

general icon

DIFFICULTY AND TERRAIN

This tour is suitable for riders with a good level gravel cycling experience and an intermediate - advanced level of fitness. The Douro Valley is one of the hilliest areas of Portugal, so you have to be ready to embrace the climbing on this tour. One day has significant elevation gain, of 1750m over 68km. Having said that, not many of the climbs are steep - they are usually long steady climbs with switch backs through the vines, pretty much as good as climbing gets!

Routes are selected and tested by our team, and little of this route is technical. The roads are very small, and the most traffic-free we can find. Gravel tracks range from 'Eco-Pistas' (usually converted railway lines) to tracks suitable for a 4x4 vehicle. There is no hike-a-bike on this tour!

general icon

EATING AND DRINKING

Luckily Portugal has no shortage of cafés in all the small villages you will pass! Expect fantastic Portuguese cuisine suitable for cyclists in the evening and good coffee stops and pastel de natas during the ride. Please note that some of the more rural cafés might only take cash. Recommended dinners will be either at the hotel, within walking distance or a short taxi ride.

general icon

24/7 SUPPORT

If you book a self-guided tour, we are always on the end of the phone. This means that if you need mechanical support, want to change a booking, or anything else which may crop up on the road, our friendly (bilingual!) team are here to help.

Accommodation

Please note that due to availability, accommodation may vary from the hotels listed above.

Depending on your group size, we may be able to offer you a choice of hotels. Where possible we will do our best to accommodate you in small, traditional hotels and guesthouses where you will enjoy a truly unique experience each night.
